Newly appointed Ensemble-in-Residence
The appointment is part of the House's ongoing ethos to support musicians in the early stages of their careers. The four members of The Burney Players are Ian Wilson (recorders), Harriet Wiltshire (cello), Kasia Tomczak (harpsichord) and Nadja Zwiener (violin). The Burney Players start their residency in May.
The Ensemble-in-Residence will give regular performances as part of Handel House's events programme, as well as work closely with the Composer-in-Residence on education and family events. The Burney Players will launch their residency with a concert on 6 May at 3pm, featuring music by Handel, Arne, Geminiani and J.C.Bach and readings from Dr Charles Burney's diaries.
Handel House is delighted to be establishing a close relationship with this young professional ensemble. The Burney Players see this residency as an opportunity to enrich their careers as well as support the Museum's education and events programme.

A Musical Launch with The Burney Players

A special concert to celebrate the exciting appointment of acclaimed early music group The Burney Players as Handel House's first Ensemble-in-Residence, featuring music by Handel, Arne, Geminiani, J.C.Bach and readings from Dr Charles Burney's diaries. The Burney Players are Ian Wilson (recorders), Harriet Wiltshire (cello), Kasia Tomczak (harpsichord), and Nadja Zwiener (violin). Refreshments will be served following the concert.

Hardly Handel: Venetian Fire

Ensemble-in-Residence, The Burney Players, present a programme of 17th-century Italian music. Ian Wilson (recorders), Kasia Tomczak (harpsichord) and Nadja Zwiener (violin) perform pieces by Castello, Fontana, Uccellini, Merula and Frescobaldi.

Celtic Capitals
Thursday 9 August, 6.30 to 7.30pm
The Burney Players perform music by Barsanti, Roseingrave, Giordani, Reid and McGibbon - composers who lived in Dublin and Edinburgh. With Ian Wilson (recorders), Harriet Wiltshire (cello) and Kasia Tomczak (harpsichord).

Baroque Zoo
Sunday 17 June
2pm to 3pm and repeated at 3pm to 4pm.
A fun and interactive exploration of how composers have used instruments to represent animal sounds! The musicians will look at the music of Handel and other composers who lived in the 18th-century - Couperin, Williams and Leenhouts. With musicians from Ensemble-in-Residence The Burney Players (Ian Wilson and Catherine Fleming (recorders), Kasia Tomczak (harpsichord) and Zoe Shevlin (baroque bassoon)) and Mark Bowden, Composer-in-Residence.

Notes for Editors
1.The Burney Players formed in 1999 whilst studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and became the first period instrument ensemble to be awarded a fellowship there. They have performed and broadcast across Europe to critical acclaim and won several awards including the Zofia Rayzacher Prize (Poland), The Deutsche Bank Pyramid Award (UK/Germany) as well as being prize-winners in the 2002 Van Wassenaer Competition (Netherlands). The Burney Players take their name from Dr Charles Burney - the eighteenth-century musician, traveller and diarist - and like to illustrate their performances with readings and anecdotes. www.theburneyplayers.com.
